The Sons of the American Revolution honors our Revolutionary War patriot ancestors by promoting patriotism, serving our communities, and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our Country.

Who We Are

National Society, Louisville, KY

The Florida Society is a state society of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). It is an educational organization for men who can document direct descent from an individual who supported the American cause during the Revolutionary War. These ancestors may have served in the Continental Army or Navy, provided supplies or financial assistance, held civil office, participated in committees supporting independence, or performed other recognized forms of service. Founded on April 30, 1889, the organization is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.

Membership is based on genealogy and historical documentation. Applicants must demonstrate direct descendancy from a Patriot of the American Revolution and provide records documenting each generation between themselves and that ancestor. The society welcomes members regardless of race, religion, age, national origin, or citizenship.

The society’s works to honor and preserve the memory of cause and history of American independence. Through ceremonies, commemorations, historical research, and educational programs, the society promotes a deeper understanding of the Revolutionary era and the principles associated with the founding of the United States. Its mission includes promoting patriotism, serving communities, and educating and inspiring future generations about the nation’s founding principles.

The society also works to preserve historical sites, documents, artifacts, and family histories connected to the American Revolution. Local chapters organize grave-marking ceremonies, reenactments, essay contests, scholarships, public presentations, and educational programs for students. These activities connect family history with public history by demonstrating how individual families and communities contributed to the creation of the United States.

In addition, the organization promotes civic responsibility and community service as a nonpartisan, nonprofit. Its activities focus on historical and patriotic education rather than on supporting any particular political party. Through this work, the Sons of the American Revolution seeks to keep the history of the founding era meaningful while encouraging citizens — especially young people — to understand and carry forward the ideals of liberty, self-government, and public service.
